What Is EMDR Consultation?
EMDR consultation is professional mentorship for therapists who have completed basic EMDR training and are implementing this powerful approach in their clinical practice. Consultation provides an opportunity to receive feedback on your EMDR work, deepen your understanding of the protocols, refine your skills, and receive guidance on complex cases.
At Raincross Family Counseling, EMDR consultation is provided by Reba Machado, M.S., LMFT, a Certified EMDR Therapist and EMDRIA Approved Consultant with extensive experience in using EMDR therapy across diverse clinical populations.
Whether you're seeking formal certification or simply want to improve your EMDR practice, our consultation services are designed to help you provide the highest quality care to your clients.
Our consultation services can support you in:
Meeting EMDRIA requirements for becoming a Certified EMDR Therapist
Completing consultation hours required by EMDR training programs
Enhancing your confidence and competence in using EMDR therapy
Working through challenging cases and clinical impasses
Adapting EMDR protocols for specific populations or presenting issues
Implementing EMDR effectively in telehealth settings
Integrating EMDR with other therapeutic approaches
Specializing in particular areas such as perinatal trauma, complex trauma, or specific anxiety disorders
Our Approach to
EMDR Consultation
At Raincross Family Counseling, our approach to EMDR consultation is guided by these key principles:
✔ Collaborative Learning Environment
We create a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can honestly share your clinical work, ask questions, and receive constructive feedback. Our goal is to foster your growth and confidence as an EMDR practitioner.
✔ Fidelity to the Model
Our consultation emphasizes adherence to the standard EMDR therapy protocols while also exploring thoughtful adaptations for specific client needs. This balance ensures both therapeutic effectiveness and appropriate clinical flexibility.
✔ Culturally Responsive Lens
Our deep roots in the diverse Riverside community inform our approach to consultation. We explore how cultural factors influence trauma processing and how EMDR therapy can be implemented in culturally sensitive ways.
✔ Practical Application
Our consultation bridges theory and practice, offering concrete strategies you can immediately apply with your clients. We focus on real-world clinical situations rather than abstract concepts.
✔ Case Conceptualization Focus
Beyond technical implementation, we help you develop robust case conceptualization skills using the Adaptive Information Processing model. This deeper understanding allows you to make strategic treatment decisions and navigate complex client presentations.
✔ Professional Development Support
We understand the journey toward EMDR mastery and certification. Our consultation includes guidance on documentation, meeting EMDRIA requirements, and developing your identity as an EMDR therapist.
Throughout the consultation relationship, we tailor our approach to your specific learning needs, experience level, and professional goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, EMDR consultation specifically focuses on your implementation of EMDR therapy rather than general clinical skills or professional development. Consultation is typically more collaborative and educational than traditional supervision. However, for pre-licensed therapists, we can provide both clinical supervision and EMDR consultation simultaneously.
-
If you've completed an EMDRIA-approved basic training in EMDR therapy (typically Parts 1 and 2), you're ready to begin consultation. Ideally, you should have at least a few clients with whom you're using or planning to use EMDR therapy so that you have case material to discuss.
-
EMDRIA Certification requires completion of an EMDRIA-approved basic training, at least two years of experience as a licensed mental health professional, a minimum of 50 sessions using EMDR therapy with at least 25 clients, and 20 hours of EMDR-specific consultation from an Approved Consultant. Our consultation services can help you meet these requirements and prepare your certification documentation.
-
For individual consultation, it's helpful to come with specific questions, cases you'd like to discuss, or video/audio recordings of your EMDR sessions (with appropriate client consent). For group consultation, you should prepare a brief case presentation following a template we'll provide. The more specific you can be about where you need guidance, the more beneficial the consultation will be.
-
Yes, consultation hours obtained while you're pre-licensed can count toward EMDRIA Certification as long as they occur after you've completed basic EMDR training. However, you'll need to be fully licensed before you can apply for EMDRIA Certification.
-
For most practitioners, professional consultation is considered a business expense related to continuing education or professional development. However, we recommend consulting with your tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
-
The frequency depends on your goals and how actively you're using EMDR in your practice. For those working toward certification, monthly consultation is often ideal. Those seeking to develop expertise in specific areas might benefit from more intensive periods of consultation. We can help you determine the right schedule for your needs.
-
Absolutely. Reba Machado has extensive experience providing EMDR therapy via telehealth and can offer specific guidance on adapting protocols for online delivery, managing technological aspects, and ensuring client safety in remote settings.
-
We require 24 hours' notice for cancellation of individual consultation appointments. For group consultation, we appreciate at least 48 hours' notice so that we can offer your spot to another therapist if possible.
-
